Four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti broke his back during a horrific crash at the Grand Prix of Houston.
Franchitti’s car went airborne on the final lap of the race.
Franchitti broke two vertebrae, fractured his right ankle and suffered a concussion, USA Today reports.
Flying debris injured thirteen spectators in the stands. IndyCar scoring official Kim Tyger suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Drivers E.J. Viso and Takuma Sato were also involved in the crash. They weren’t hurt.

The accident occurred nearly two years after the death of IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon, who died at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Franchetti, 40, has been involved in several close calls during his racing career.
He’s getting a divorce from actress Ashley Judd following 11 years of marriage. But the two remain close.
“Thank you for the prayers for @dariofranchitti,” Judd tweeted after the race. “I have only clothes on my back & the dogs but that’s all that we need & we are on our way.”
